"We do business only with suppliers that adopt and implement our standards or have policies reflecting the same values"

Ethical Sourcing

Improving the lives of the people who make our products is one of our top priorities.

Many of our products are sourced from supplier factories in different countries around the world. So we need to know about working conditions in these countries and take responsibility for the people who make our products, even when they do not work for us directly.

Our policy is to only do business with suppliers that adopt and implement our standards or have policies reflecting the same values. Local legal compliance is always part of our trading contract with suppliers and our Code of Employment Standards for Suppliers is based on the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Base Code. (see Policies)

Ethical Sourcing the Pentland Way

Our approach to monitoring supplier factories is based on building good relationships that encourage cooperation in an open and constructive way.

We help our suppliers implement the Code which includes provisions to give workers fair wages and working hours, safe and hygienic working conditions, regular employment and no discrimination, or harsh or inhumane treatment. Our Code also specifies that no child labour is used, employment is freely chosen, and workers have the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining.

We review factories with factory management to identify risks and make recommendations for improvements. We then help and encourage our suppliers by sharing best practice, providing resources, training or regular follow-up and linking them with appropriate local organisations where possible.

Our approach is described in Ethical Sourcing the Pentland Way. Read more

Long term strategy

Many of the issues we face in our supply chain are complex and require a long-term strategic approach, sometimes over many years. We recognise that true progress takes time, commitment, resources, patience and cooperation.

We work together with other companies, partners, and international and local organisations to improve workers’ lives and to find new ways to address issues and find lasting solutions. For examples of some of our initiatives see Case Studies.
