It was an American architect by the name of Bob Gamm who conceived the original idea for shoes with pockets back in 1979.
Gamm, a running enthusiast, had struggled to find a place to store his keys and money whilst out jogging his daily 10K. Taking matters into his own hands, Gamm, a keen designer, developed his own lightweight training shoe with a small zippered pocket on the side.
The KangaROOS brand was born.
KangaROOS’ history is rich with a culture of innovation and fun, driven by the pioneer spirit of its founder Bob Gamm, and KangaROOS’ future is no different.
Working with world-class local partners, to understand and communicate with consumers, has given KangaROOS a competitive edge in an ever-changing global market.
2009 marks the “30 Year Anniversary” of the KangaROOS brand, which has come a long way since its humble jogging shoe origins.
With running in its pocket, it wasn’t long before KangaROOS had exploded onto the American sports scene. By the mid 1980s, the famous logo had started to appear on a number of high-profile US sports stars, including the brand’s most famous ambassador and NFL legend Walter 'Sweetness' Payton.
By the 1990s, “the brand with pockets” was receiving growing interest from the rest of the world and, due to popular demand, began exporting its footwear to Europe and beyond.
Today, KangaROOS is a truly global lifestyle brand, distributing footwear, apparel and accessories in over 60 countries worldwide.
Although the offer has evolved beyond purely performance-based products, KangaROOS remains true to its sports heritage and stays committed to challenging the basic aesthetics of design that Gamm himself began all those years ago.
